q: am i too young/old to join the dojo?
A: Mearns dojo welcomes all members over the age of 7. we believe you are never too old to learn a martial art.
q: DO I NEED TO BE PHYSICALLY FIT TO TRAIN?
A: NO, NOT AT ALL. these styles of karate and aikido ARE SUITED TO ALL FITNESS LEVELS AND can be practiced by aLL DIFFERENT BODY TYPES AND ABILITIES. if you have any concerns, let our coaches know.
q: what should i wear?
A: for your first few training sessions we recommend you wear comfortable, loose clothing such as a t-shirt AND jogging/tracksuit bottoms. AS YOU WILL BE TRAINING IN BARE FEET WE RECOMMEND YOU BRING FLIP FLOPS SO YOU CAN WALK AROUND THE DOJO WITHOUT BRINGING OUTSIDE DIRT ONTO THE MAT / TRAINING AREA.
q:how will i be graded -tested?
A: club gradings will take place everY 3-6 months and new students will be assessed for grading beforehand. for more details ON ELIGIBILITY FOR GRADING, students should speak to sensei robertson.
q:how long will it take me to progress through the grading system?
a: the study of karate and aikido is by no means a short process however with your commitment and guidance from our coaches you will be able to progress GRADUALLY with confidence.
q:do i need any prior knowledge of karate or aikido to join?
a: no you don't need to know anything about martial arts before coming along. our coaches will explain all aspects of training throughout the classes. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO ASK OUR COACHES OR REQUEST INFORMATION FROM SENSEI ROBERTSON.
q:how do i get in touch with sensei if i'm late or am unable to make a class?
a: if you know you are not able to attend a class or grading etc. please feel free to contact sensei robertson directly via one of the contacts provided on our contact page.
q: Do I need insurance to practice?
a: Yes. For your safety and that of THE OTHER students, you can only practice if you have martial arts insurance. This can be obtained on joining the Mearns Dojo. Payment for INSURANCE AND membership to the Dojo is obligatory after your third lesson.
q: Can I come and watch?
a: yes, Please feel free to come along to a class and watch, ask questions, or join in!
